CORPUS CHRISTI - The committee in charge of designing the plan for the city's street maintenance project has been given a deadline of February 14th to finalize the details.
On Tuesday, the committee presented it's proposal to raise $55.7 million needed every year to repair a percentage of streets.
One of the options presented includes a street usage fee that will be paid by residents and business drive on city streets.
However, it appears that the rate you may end up paying per month could be different than your neighbors.
Assistant City Manager Oscar Martinez tells us charging a flat rate utility fee would not be fair to everyone. "If we were to have a flat rate to recover these dollars, is it fair to charge a residence or home that has maybe, 2 or 3 vehicles, and and charge that same rate for a commercial establishment that may have a parking lot for 50 to a 100 cars?" asked Martinez.
That's why the city street committee is using a previous survey taken by the Institute of Traffic Engineers to determine the difference in fees between you and your neighbor.
According to Martinez, the fee will be decided based on a couple of factors. First, how many cars you have at your home along with how many miles you drive.
Second, the size of your vehicle will factor into your fee since larger vehicles cause more wear and tear to the road.
Martinez also says that if you live in say an apartment complex or a community of some sort the city will be working with your property manager or owner to decide how the total fee will be divided up amongst the tenants.
