ROBSTOWN - Goats, turkeys, rabbits and pigs are all making their way to the Richard M. Borchard Fairgrounds this week for the 77th annual Nueces County Junior Livestock Show.
Students from across the county are competing for college money and bragging rights.
Chickens and rabbits took center stage today as judges checked each animal for size and yield, offering up tips for entrants in the care of their stock.
The kids who raised these animals tell us they spend a lot of time getting ready for the annual show.
Katie Goode says her hard work paid off, "I brush her every day, I play with her so she's familiar with humans." She earned grand champion honors twice for rabbit breeding in her division.
Hard work is a concept Elaine and Brooke Perez understand well as they take responsibility for their chickens.
Official John Thornberry, who's second in charge of the poultry division, says placing is not all about size though. "Three consistent birds is much better than two big birds and a small bird," Thornberry told us.
Getting to the livestock show is a six week journey for the students who care for their animals.
"Lots of folks go around the clock, somebody gets up in their house every 4 hours goes up, gets them to feed a little bit and its about keeping them on the feed and on water," Thornberry says.
Student Stephanie Perez says it is a simple formula that requires dedication, "Time, effort, good grades, lots of work."
Hard work that might pay off when it comes time to auction off the animals on Saturday.
