Islanders Snap Skid; Pick Up First Conference Win Since March 11, 2010

CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team (5-11, 1-2) snapped a string of 18 Southland Conference losses, capturing a 78-73 win over Southeastern Louisiana (5-10, 0-2) at the American Bank Center. The Islanders were propelled by three players in double-figure scoring in their first conference win of the season.
Senior Myeisha Myles powered the Islanders with her eighth double-figure scoring game with 18 points, including a perfect 4-of-4 from behind the line. Sophomore Marquesha Anderson-Sparks tallied her sixth double-digit scoring game with a career-high 16 points, including a career-best five from behind the arc. Senior Zoe Vega-Vega led both teams on the boards with a career-high 15 boards and a career-best 15 points.
The Islanders shot 37.9 percent from the field (25-66), 42.1 percent from behind the arc (8-19) and 74.1 percent from the charity stripe (20-27). Southeastern Louisiana edged the Islanders on the boards 49-41 but the Islanders capitalized on 27 points off the Lady Lions 20 turnovers.
Southeastern Louisiana was paced by four players in double-figure scoring. Latoria Holder led the Lady Lions with 16, Jessica Sommers added 14 and Aja Gibson and Kelli Jenkins each added 12.
The Lady Lions jumped out to a 6-0 lead with back-to-back three-pointers from Holder and Myles made two free throws. The two teams traded buckets back-and-forth before the Islanders pulled ahead on a 5-0 run with a jumper by Vega-Vega and a three by junior Imani Dunn.
The Lady Lions clawed their way back on a 5-0 run at the 14:20 mark. Jessica Jammer hit her first jumper of the game before the Lions tied it at 13. The Islanders notched the lead on back-to-back jumpers from junior Alisa Roberts and Jammer to give the Islanders a four-point lead. The Lady Lions evened the score at 21 on a 3-0 run. The Islanders padded their lead to nine with 4:40 to go on a 9-0 run. Freshman Trish Amboree triggered her first three-pointer of the game since the Southern Methodist game. Myles added a layup and Vega-Vega chipped in a jumper and two free throws to cap the run. After Southeastern Louisiana's Summer Postell made two free throws, Anderson-Sparks triggered her first of five made three-pointers of the game.
Southeastern Louisiana cut it to six with less than a minute left. Anderson-Sparks hit another three-pointer with three seconds left in the half. Holder made a layup and Jammer hit her third three-pointer of the season as time expired to pad the Islanders lead to 10 at the half.
Jammer led the Islanders into halftime with seven points and Vega-Vega led both teams on the glass with eight rebounds. The Islanders shot 38.9 (14-36) percent from the field. Holder led the Lady Lions with eight points including 2-of-4 from downtown. Southeastern Louisiana edged the Islanders on the glass 25-22.
The Lady Lions came out of the locker room on a 6-0 run with Gibson hitting all three of her shots. The Islanders answered with a 15-0 run, jumpstarted by Myles two free throws and Anderson-Sparks three-pointer. Myles hit three consecutive layups, junior Damequia Montgomery made a free throw and Anderson-Sparks hit another three-pointer to extend the Islanders lead to 19 with 13 minutes to play.
The two teams traded buckets back-and-fourth until the Lady Lions cut the lead to 10 with eight minutes to go on a 6-0 run. Southeastern Louisiana crawled their way back on a 12-5 run to cut the Islanders lead to three with four minutes to play. Vega-Vega's bucket gave the Islanders a 68-63 lead, but Sommers answered with back-to-back three's to give the Lady Lions their first lead since the 14:11 mark in the first half.
Southeastern Louisiana took a one-point lead with 1:50 left in the half until the Islanders answered with a 4-0 run behind Vega-Vega's layup and Myles two free throws. The Lady Lions trailed by one, 74-73, until the Islanders finished it with four free throws by Dunn, Taylor and Vega-Vega.
The Islanders will travel to UT Arlington on Wednesday, Jan. 18 to face the Mavericks. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
