CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's basketball team will travel north to take on Central Michigan as part of the 2012 Sears BracketBusters, it was announced today. The Islanders and Chippewas will do battle on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. in Mount Pleasant, Mich. It will be the first meeting between the Islanders and CMU.
BracketBusters is in its 10th year of existence in 2012. The event pits teams from several non-BCS conferences against each other in hopes of bolstering their NCAA Tournament resume. A total of 142 teams (from 16 conferences) are taking part in this year's BracketBusters event, including all 12 Southland institutions.
As part of next year's Bracketbusters, the Islanders will host a game in the event next season at the American Bank Center, with that opponent selected approximately three weeks beforehand. A&M - Corpus Christi also will receive a return game from Central Michigan at a date to be determined before the end of 2013.
Three Southland Conference teams have previously participated in a total of four BracketBusters games. Northwestern State has previously played in two BracketBusters matchups and rode its first appearance in 2006 at Utah State to a first-round upset over Iowa in the NCAA Tournament. The Demons also met Tennessee Tech in a BracketBusters game. Stephen F. Austin also played in the 2006 event and Sam Houston State played in 2007. While the conference is winless in its four previous BracketBusters games, which have all been played on the road, the league won all four of the guaranteed return games the next year.
