KINGSVILLE - Did you know Javelinas guard Ashton Brown currently leads the nation in free throw percentage? The junior sensation is shooting better than 96% from the charity stripe connecting on 83 of 86 tries.
Brown told me it's a good percentage, but could be better.
"I'm kind of a perfectionist so I could have done better. The three I missed, I just lost focus."
And you won't believe what he claims is his personal best from the line.
"Last summer I made 397 free throws in a row with my grandpa in South Carolina and I don't know how many people have done it but I got lucky. Good day," he said.
Standing 5' 10", he leads Texas A&M-Kingsville in scoring netting 17.3 ppg.
"Everyone calls me mouse because at home I am the smallest and they call me mouse in the house," he said as he smiled.
But life hasn't always been so easy. During his senior season in high school his mother lost her job and had to hustle to make ends meet. Times got so tough, that Ashton remembers his mother skipping meals so that her children could eat.
"I seen some things I wish I didn't see, sleeping on the floor a whole summer, but it made me stronger," he added.
Brown even recalls thinking about quitting the game he loves so much, but it was mom who stopped him.
"She said do my thing and I will help her out longer in the long run so two years of this and I can help her out," he said.
Brown and the Javs are back in action January 18th at Incarnate Word.
