From the City of Corpus Christi
CORPUS CHRISTI - Thousands of seniors each year are victims of scams, fraud, abuse, and identity theft. Seniors are often persuaded to provide their personal information to callers who offer something they might need, such as transportation to kidney dialysis appointment, scooters, or diabetic or arthritis supplies. "Once a scam artist has someone's Medicare number, they will pass it around," states Barbara McGinity, Texas SMP Project Director.
The City of Corpus Christi's RSVP program and the Better Business Bureau are partnering with the First United Methodist Church and Community Partners to help educate our communities on the prevention of numerous forms of fraud, scams and abuse.
Communities throughout Nueces County and surrounding areas are invited and strongly encouraged to attend a one-day seminar on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 to learn: (1) how not to become targets of crime, fraud, scams, abuse and theft, (2) how to protect yourself and your properties, (3) how to protect your Medicare benefits, and (4) learn why older Americans are tempting targets in today's economic stress. Presentations will be offered by several Community Partners: Better Business Bureau, Corpus Christi Police Department, Lighthouse Hospice, Adult Protective Services, LEPC, and Texas Investor Protection Services. Also, come learn of the numerous "free" community service programs for the elderly and low income persons offered by the Methodist Health Ministry Wesley Nurses and Counselor. You won't want to miss this information.
The one-day "Fraud Awareness and Prevention" seminar will be held on Tuesday, February 28, 2012, 10am-3pm, at the First United Methodist Church, 900 S. Shoreline Corpus Christi, Texas. Admission is FREE and open to the public. Lunch will be provided. Reservations are required. Please call the RSVP office at 361-826-3199 by February 24, 2012 to make your reservation.
Millions of Dollars are lost each year due to Fraud and Scams. Learn how you can help prevent these losses.
RSVP was established in 1971 as a national federal program funded in part by the Corporation for National and Community Service. The City of Corpus Christi has been the local sponsor of the RSVP Program since 1977. The RSVP program operates under the Corpus Christi Parks & Recreation Department.
