CORPUS CHIRSTI - Business owners met with City Manager Oscar Martinez today to voice their disapproval of the proposal to raise $55 million for street repairs every year through a street user fee.
Those in attendance expressed their concern they would be taxed unfairly as businesses to cover the street repair costs.
Another concern is whether residents and businesses could afford the added costs of the fee, and whether or not the rate would be affordable or fair to all.
When we spoke to Assistant City Manager Oscar Martinez earlier this month about the possibility of flat rate, he asked if it would be fair to levy the same fee on a resident, who has two or three cars, and a business that has a parking lot for 50 to 100 cars.
The data used to determine to the proposed fee is based on a earlier survey by the Institute of Traffic Engineers. The city would take into account how many cars are at a home/business, how many miles they are driven, the size of the vehicle will also be considered due to the difference in wear and tear on road surfaces.
No decision has been made by city council about whether to move forward with the proposal. The decision could be made by voters in the near future.
