Texas A&M - Corpus Christi starting pitcher Adam Hoelscher has been named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday afternoon.
The Islanders junior tossed a complete game shutout on Saturday in the first game of the year to help his team to a 3-0 victory. The native of Corpus Christi from Calallen High School struck out a career-high seven Omaha Nebraska batters in his first career complete game.
"I thought he was dominant Saturday afternoon," said head coach Scott Malone. "He got the series with Omaha off to a great start and set the tone for our entire pitching staff.
"If you look at big pictures, I feel like our pitching staff is going to be the strength of the team. Hopefully he got the season set off on the right tone for the entire pitching staff."
It was the first start for Hoelscher at the top spot of the rotation, and the junior delivered a tone-setting performance for the weekend. The team went 3-1 against UNO in a pair of doubleheaders this past Saturday and Sunday.
"He's worked really hard this fall and spring to develop, not only on the mound, but mentally to try and become one of the best starters in the Southland.
"Hopefully he is on his way to becoming that guy."
The Islanders will be back in action tonight, Feb. 21, at against the Houston Cougars. The teams are set for a 6:30 p.m. contest at Cougar Field.
Following the midweek tilt, the Islanders will return home to take part in the Kleberg Bank College Classic. The tournament will feature the Islanders, as well as Nebraska, UNLV and Utah in the three-day event.
